shifter linkage
Here are some pictures of shifter karts to give you a good idea of how they do the throttle linkage and shifting linkage in current karts.
1.) The clutch looks like it is operated by the LEFT hand (probably only to get the kart rolling in first gear). The shifter is operated by the RIGHT hand.

I had seen pics of shifter karts, so I knew where the shifter was. I'm glad you posted these pics, since I had no idea what was done for the clutch. I'd guess you're right about not using it except to get going in first.
