Engine mounts

I found some good mini-chopper pictures that show more-or-less where and how the Vertical style Lifan engines are mounted on the bike.

This is one vote towards using a vertical style engine versus horizontal style. It looks fairly straightfoward to mount. And most of the engine mounts come from the bottom - as they would have to if this engine was mounted on a kart.
As far as HIGH mounts, that would be extremely difficult to attach to from a kart chassis (bottom), I only see 1 mount and it is just above the carb - visible from the rear picture.

You'll have to click on the image to see the front mounts.
You can see there are 2 mounts at the base of the front of the engine.
These are relatively easy to get to when attaching to a kart chassis from the bottom.

There are 3 seperate mounts visible in this picture.
2 at the base, and 1 just above the carb.
We may not have to use the mount by the carb. It seems like it would be difficult to mount securely to the kart chassis anyway.

Hopefully I will have time to put some horizontal engine mount pictures up, so we can do a direct comparison. Or at least pictures of the horizontal style engine.

Chain Guide

This site is a pretty good resource for information about chains and chain identification:
http://www.gizmology.net/sprockets.htm

I still need to measure the go-kart chain to identify it, and research the 4-cycle dirtbike engine sprocket/chain size...
If you find out any info, please don't hesitate to add to the post or leave a comment.

Best guesses right now (online research, no measurements):

Go kart chain: #35
Dirtbike Chain: #420, #428, or #520 -- most likely #520 for engines 150cc and over.

Guesses for the Dirtbike chain have come from the Motorcross section of the Chain Selector at:
http://www.ekchain.com/select.htm

Guesses for the Go Kart chain have come from the TSRacing site chain selection, and from their Understanding Chain tips page.

Not a kart

yeah, yeah, I know it's misplaced, but I figured you'd read this blog more than the other. Here's a bad day for a Trans Am:

shifter linkage

Here are some pictures of shifter karts to give you a good idea of how they do the throttle linkage and shifting linkage in current karts.

1.) The clutch looks like it is operated by the LEFT hand (probably only to get the kart rolling in first gear). The shifter is operated by the RIGHT hand.

It's relatively cheap, unless the price skyrockets. Right now, it's $610 with 3.5 days left.

Local Kart Racing League

From email to here...

I went to Google and searched for: "Lifan vs. Honda"
Being that I wanted to try and find some information about people that use the Lifan engines versus the Honda (or as Honda replacements). From what I understand Lifan is the number one seller of motorcycles 250cc and under in China. I believe they are American Lifan in the USA.

This is a good site because they sell engines and parts for mini-choppers. This link is to their Lifan engine selection. The engine on the site that stuck in my mind is the Vertical 100cc engine -- it is somewhat more expensive than the engines that lay down. Do you think there is any benefit either way?

Another cool thing, is that they sell exhausts for these engines as well, to the tune of $60 (in case we want a new one). I haven't checked out S/H costs yet. (let me know if you find that info on the page)

http://www.rnrfabrication.com/lifanengine.htm

These guys did have a 110 cc engine ($308) the shipping is $83 to 40511 zip. And for the 100 cc vertical engine ($371) the shipping is $42! Making the total either way right at $400!! (without exhaust though). The 100cc horizontal engine ($308) and shipping was $32. I priced it again WITH the exhaust ($60) and shipping was $42. So I can get engine and exhaust after shipping for $410. That's a 6.5 hp horizontal 100 cc engine. As for electronics, each link says it comes with engine, transmission, carb, and electronics - which is nice.

The horizontal has a higher (9:1) compression ratio, but revs only to 7.5k, while the vertical is only 8.6:1, and revs to 8.5k to make 3/4 more hp. Did you notice that the 110cc horizontal engines cost the same as the 100cc. Weird.

Other things I have to research are sprocket and chain pitch -- what I have -- what I need to use this engine -- do they make it for my current sprocket mount? Really I have to find out what I currently have on the cart. I think these engines will use fairly common pitch chains -- being that they are replacement for honda's, but I need to know if it's the same as used on the cart. Also, I have to determine if we actually need a wiring harness or not to use a dirtbike engine.

More sites of possible interest:

These guys sell alot of accessories (clutch levers, cables, etc.) --
looks like ok prices:
http://www.partsforscooters.com/

I was looking here at their motor mount selection -- not enough investigation to say whether this site is any good or not, just another one to check out:http://parts4karts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=ALL

Here's a couple of Lifan engine auctions:

Item: 140027787291
auction for a horizontal 125cc lifan engine -- oil cooled head.
Buy it now $350 (OBO possible $300?), $80 s/h = total $430 (OBO possible $380?)

Item: 220023594768
auction for a vertical 200cc lifan engine --- talks about "new and
improved" oil pump.
Buy it now $275, $90 s/h = $365 total. Optional wiring harness for $40.

Item: 170028712412
auction is for a horizontal 110cc lifan engine -- HAS A HONDA HEAD.
Buy it now $265, $61 s/h = $330 total (max).
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Lifan-110cc-4sp-engine-for-Honda-XR50-CT70-manual-i_W0QQitemZ170028712412QQihZ007QQcategoryZ35595QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I plan on compiling a table of the following type information:

It's for item # 220026858379
Here's a link to the current auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/150cc-LIFAN-Engine-Honda-ATV-Dirt-Bike-Go-Kart-Chopper_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34284QQihZ012QQitemZ220026858379QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Keep in mind, this is a VERTICAL style engine. So we have to
investigate engine mount possibilty/feasibility.
All in all, $390 is not a bad price for upto 13 hp and a 5 speed tranny.
Brief research shows that the $60 exhaust is more of a "stock" pretty
restrictive exhaust. That xr50 website sells racing header exhausts,
but they are closer to $200!!
